9 Things you need to know about colostrum

Have you ever heard about Colostrum? Many people use this “Liquid Gold” for tackling their gut problems and supporting their immune system.

But, how does it work? What else is it useful for? Where does it come from? What about the baby cows? Is it safe to take? I know. So many questions.

But hey, don’t worry! We’re going to go through all of this and more!

#1 What Is Colostrum?

First things first. Colostrum is a highly nutritious milky fluid produced by all mammals right after giving birth and before the actual milk production starts.

Yes, that also means humans. So the chances are, you are actually more familiar with Colostrum than you might have thought. To be clear though, our Colostrum supplement is bovine, meaning it has been produced by cows. Colostrum is rich in bioactive factors such as immunoglobulins, lactoferrin and growth factors. These immunoglobulins include naturally occurring antibodies IgG – that make this supplement a powerful weapon against many health issues.

#2 Colostrum and Newborns

Secondly, let’s talk about why Colostrum is important for newborns (human babies, baby cows, etc.).

When babies are born, they are very vulnerable to diseases, viruses and bacteria as their gut and immune system are not fully developed. Colostrum helps them to neutralize those bacteria and viruses. Colostrum also helps them establish a healthy gut microbiome and provide initial protection against different illnesses.

It is important to note that human and bovine Colostrum actually have a different composition – human Colostrum does not contain IgG antibodies, as these are transferred from the mother to the child via the placenta. That means that bovine Colostrum is packed with even more superpowers.

#3 Colostrum and GI Tract Health

One of the main reasons people turn to Colostrum is gut problems. Thousands of people have found that taking Colostrum supplements has helped them strengthen their gut and support healthy gastrointestinal function.

Studies have shown that the growth factors present in Colostrum may stimulate the growth and repair of gastrointestinal tract. They stimulate cell growth and therefore strengthen the lining of the gut. This makes Colostrum extremely beneficial for people with leaky gut which is also one of the reasons for developing autoimmune diseases.

Colostrum Helps with GI health while traveling

Colostrum is also said to help with constipation and other digestion problems.

In fact, some people take Colostrum before and while travelling to high risk destinations, such as Mexico, Central and South America, to reduce the risk of Traveler’s Diarrhea – the unpleasant experience caused by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water.

Caution: If you decide to try this out, don’t forget to follow the regular protocol, such as drinking only bottled water and avoiding ice cubes in your drink (careful with those Margaritas!).

#4 Colostrum and Immune System

The immunoglobulins present in Colostrum make it one of the most powerful naturally occurring immune system boosting supplements. Research showed that daily supplementation of bovine Colostrum had a positive effect on the immune system of cyclists.

Another study showed that supplementation with Colostrum helped with enhancing the athletes’ immune system as well as reduced the chance of suffering from the symptoms of respiratory tract infections.

Wondering why the studies have been made with athletes? Athletes spend a lot of time training and this puts their immune system to a continuous test. Athletes, especially endurance athletes are often known to suffer from respiratory tract infections which can in turn interrupt their training schedules. All of that of course means that Colostrum has the same benefits for non-athletes.

#5 Colostrum for Bodybuilding and Healthy Weight Management

Not only have professional athletes shown to benefit from supplementing with Colostrum, research has also shown that it can be useful for building lean muscle mass.

Another study with male recreational weight lifters showed that bovine Colostrum can help with increasing muscle mass and decreasing fat mass (and therefore also the body fat percentage). The dream of a beach body just got closer?

Important disclaimer: to get similar results to those weight lifters, you need to be actually training as well. Colostrum will most probably not work wonders with couch potatoes. Sorry about that!

#6 The Anti-Aging Benefits of Colostrum

Colostrum is also believed to have a positive effect on the human skin, bones and hair. This is mainly thanks to the growth factors found in Colostrum that stimulate cell growth and regeneration. The same study also showed that Colostrum may be beneficial in wound healing.

When it comes to bones, studies have shown that the mentioned growth factors are capable of promoting bone formation and hindering bone resorption. Another study showed that supplementing with Colostrum could prevent osteoporosis, a very common condition among older adults that affects bones. The same growth factors can also contribute to healthy hair and nails.

#7 What About the Baby Cows?

Colostrum Baby cows

Don’t worry, we’ve actually got everyone covered!

After a calf is born, the cow produces 10-15 liters of Colostrum. The calf needs about 4-5 liters of Colostrum for the development of its healthy immune system and gut. Colostrum farmers then take a couple of liters from each cow to produce the Colostrum supplement.

It is also important to note that even if the baby cow would get more Colostrum, the benefits would not increase, as the beforementioned 4-5 liters is just enough for its needs to develop a healthy immune system and gut.

#8 Is Colostrum Safe for Everyone?

Colostrum contains lactose, therefore people allergic to lactose should avoid taking it.

NutriONN’s non-GMO Colostrum supplement is sourced exclusively from the first milking of US Dairy cows. It is further processed at low heat to make sure that all the immunoglobulins and proteins remain in the most bioavailable form.

As with all our other supplements, you also have our promise that our Colostrum is manufactured right here in the U.S.A. in a GMP-compliant facility. Furthermore, we make sure to provide you with the highest quality pure Colostrum without any artificial ingredients.

#9 Colostrum – The Secret to Happiness

Colostrum key to happiness

Last but not least, Colostrum is also the secret to happiness.

No, it’s not a joke. As I previously mentioned, Colostrum has helped thousands of people solve their gut issues.

And guess what?! The health of your gut and your mental and emotional health are interchangeably linked! Gut problems are not only the cause of more obvious physical symptoms such as pain, bloating and digestion problems. They can also lead to irritability, anxiety, fatigue and more serious mental issues like depression.

To Sum Up

Colostrum is a powerful supplement that is mainly used to address issues related to GI tract health (and therefore happiness as you just found out). It is also great for immune support, skin and bone health and building lean muscle mass. We hope you enjoyed the article and are excited to try out our Colostrum supplement yourself!

How soon are the calves taken from the mother? Ethically if they are allowed to stay for a significant time, I am ok with it. Being removed days after birth is cruel. So I want to know before purchasing a product.

Dear Dorothy, thank you for your comment and your interest in our Colostrum supplement. As we wrote in the blog post, colostrum farmers collect only a couple of litres of colostrum for being able to produce colostrum supplement. The cows and calves are back together after collecting these couple of litres of colostrum. Furthermore, we make sure the calves get the necessary amount of colostrum as a priority. I hope this helps! All the best, NutriONN

Can you tell me if these cows are grass fed and not exposed to pestisides or given antibiotics or hormones?

Dear Cynthia, thank you for your comment and your interest in our Colostrum supplement. Our colostrum is obtained from dairy cows in the US that are fed a seasonal grass diet. This means that during the winter months, when grass is less available, the cows receive additional nourishment. The cows are raised without the use of growth hormones and antibiotics. Furthermore, since natural pastures don’t require pesticides, they are not used. I hope this helps! All the best, NutriONN
